November is WriNo Month

A yearly book writing challenge for kids!

Writing a book can be daunting as most novels come in at about 50,000 words 😰 Don’t worry, you don’t have to write that much. With weekly prompts to guide your process of WriNo (Writing Novella) you can draft a short novel in one month! 😎

‘Write to express, not to impress.’

Since 2021, many participants have independently produced novellas as long as 12,000 words!

The greatest victory was not the number of words they  wrote, but the intrinsic motivation they gained as young writers - students were facilitated to approach writing as a personal passion project and self-expression, as opposed to another piece of homework.

All students were all juggling school and extra-curricular commitments throughout the writing process, yet they inspired each other with their discipline, determination, and camaraderie.

Hear it from the kids!

WriNo Month helped me learn discipline and how to make plans. It stretched my imagination and helped my writing skills grow. It encouraged me to write on a daily basis, and I achieved more than I had expected!’

WriNo Month was full of challenges. Writing had never appealed to me; however, through this course, I saw my potential unfold. Using feedback given by fellow classmates, I became a better writer. WriNo has shown me how good I am at writing. Using this memorable experience, I will continue to strive.’

‘It was a fantastic experience. I not only wrote a novella, but made heaps of friends! Writing even became my first choice of activity when I was feeling blue. The teachers gave us constructive feedback and were really supportive. The students who participated have also been really kind and contributory.’

‘For a long time, I had fantasised of becoming an author without limits, and WriNo truly helped me with that. It was packed with loads of fun while writing a serious novella, and I am proud to have been part of this.’

‘Writing books has always been a dream, but the risk of investing so much into publishing a book that may end up down the drain had always put me off. But WriNo is different because I gained many lessons. The writing process and required discipline are the experiences I would recommend everyone.’

Get Published!

By the end of November, you’ll be invited to submit your draft. A team of teachers will select up to 10 high quality stories to be published as eBooks and in paperback. WriNo books are sold at Qs School campuses and on Amazon.

All earnings are donated to Why Not Impact, supporting education in impoverished communities around the world. Qs School and Qs Community make zero profit from student-authored books.

How It Works

From the 1st of November, you’ll be provided daily prompts to guide your story. Simply follow directions, trust the process, and let your imagination flow.

1

Set a timer and write for 20 minutes (or 200 to 300 words). Don’t worry about spelling, grammar, punctuation, or finding the best idea. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just write.

2

When the timer ends, stop writing! Repeat the process until 30th November and you’ll have a story of 6000 to 9000 words! You’ll then be invited to submit your draft for a chance to be selected for guided editing and book publishing.
